Parent Involvement

Parents have the opportunity to discuss the following points with their student participating in the Transition Planning Program and the Transition Coordinator.

bulletLife after school: identifying their goals, priorities and preferences
bulletResidential, employment and support programs
bulletEligibility criteria or waiting lists for needed services
bulletA transition plan so that delays in receiving adult services can be lessened or avoided once school programs are completed
bulletCommunity networking to share information about existing services or work on the development of new programs

The Kansas Transition Planning Program is not intended for the many students who are able to enter competitive work situations and lead independent lives without need for special planning services.

By tailoring education plans to develop skills needed for adult work and community living, the foundation for a successful transition into adult life is established. Throughout the transition planning process, the Transition Coordinator is available as a resource for students and parents, helping them identify their preferences, learn about the adult service system and access community programs and employment.
